Missing a tooth affects more than your smile. It can make chewing harder, change how you speak, and over time let nearby teeth shift. Dental implants are one of the most natural-looking, long-lasting ways to replace missing teeth. At Drs. Davila & Velazquez, P.A., we help patients across Greenville and Pitt County understand every step, so you know exactly what to expect.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth's root used to be. Once it heals, it supports a custom crown that looks, feels, and works like a natural tooth. Unlike removable dentures, an implant stays in place, and it doesn't require grinding down healthy neighboring teeth the way a traditional bridge can.
Step 1: Your consultation
Everything starts with a conversation. We'll talk about your goals, your dental and medical history, and any concerns you have. It's also a good time to ask about cost, timing, and other options, so you can make the choice that's right for you.
Step 2: Exam and evaluation
Next, we take a close look at your teeth, gums, and jawbone, usually with X-rays or 3D imaging. Healthy gums and enough bone are important for a successful implant. If you need extra support, such as treating gum disease or adding bone first, we'll explain why and build that into your plan.
Step 3: Placing the implant
The implant post is gently placed in the jawbone. The area is numbed so you stay comfortable, and most patients say it's easier than they expected. Many people are back to normal activities within a day or two.
Step 4: Healing
Over the next few months, the implant bonds with your jawbone, which is what makes it so strong and stable. You may wear a temporary tooth during this time so you never have to go without a smile. We'll see you for check-ups to make sure everything is healing well.
Step 5: Your new crown
Once healing is complete, we attach a custom crown that's matched to the shape and shade of your natural teeth. The result is a tooth you can brush, floss, and chew with confidently.
Caring for your implant
Implants can last many years with good care. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular cleanings and exams. We'll check your implant at every visit.
Is an implant right for you?
Implants are a great fit for many adults who are missing one tooth, several teeth, or who want a more secure option than dentures. The best way to find out is an in-person evaluation.
